From a variety of species of birds beak bent, kasturi ternate (Lorius garrulus) is one of the most widely hunted for traded. Trade dark beautiful birds have colourful plumage is estimated to exceed 16,000 tails per year, exceeding white cockatoo who traded in the markets.

Kasturi ternate/chattering lorry has a moderate posture, with a length of about 30 cm. Fur – Fur body dominated by the color red. The wings are green with yellow color combination on the fold (edge and flaps). Thighs and tail is also green. The beak isorange with a grayish eyes circles.

Bird distribution in the region is very limited, ternate kasturi even found only in North Maluku. In other words, kasturi ternate is a bird endemic to North Maluku and became one of valuable habitat in the country of indonesia.

Kasturi ternate consists of three subspecies/res, with a different distribution in the region, namely:

  1. Lorius garrulus morotaianus: spread on Morotai and Rau.
  2. Lorius garrulus garrulus: spread over Halmahera and the surrounding islands.
  3. Lorius garrulus flavopalliatus: spread on Bacan Island, Obi, Kasiruta and Mandiole,.

This species is a resident bird of primary and secondary forests on the plateau and the edge of the forest with an elevation up to 1,040 metres above sea level (a.s.l.). They are usually found in pairs, but sometimes in a large group consisting of 10 individuals.

These include a very active birds. When gathered together his group, especially in the trees looking for a place to feed, they often fight and play with sounds quite noisy and conspicuous.

Alerts you of Birdlife records in 1993, the population was estimated at ternate kasturi 46,360 – 295,540 tail. Most major threats that the cause was further decreased its population was rampant poaching.

For years, the threat to crooked beak of bird species is the more real. Every year there are more than 16,000 tail kasturi ternate were rounded up to be traded abroad. This species is very well known among fans of the bird. In addition to its beautiful, it is also easy to tame.

Other threats which could interfere with the destruction of forests is preserved and opening of land for industrial use. Although there is no current official record about the number of the population in the wild, it is estimated the numbers continue to decline.

To prevent its extinction, the BirdLife International World Conservation Bodies and or the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) stipulate the status in the category of Vulnerable to extinction or Vulnerable (VU).
To regulate its trade, CITES enter birds kasturi ternate in Appendix II, which means itcan be traded but through a very tight setting.

It is unfortunate if the bird is endemic to North Maluku this beautiful should be extinct by human greed. Yuk we keep his existence with no menangkapinya, and do notsell or buy it.

In addition, the Government is expected to soon enter a bird list in ternate kasturi that is protected, so that our next generation can enjoy the beauty of the feathers in the wild.

May be useful.
